Dubai, two wardrobes: DIFC private dinners by night, Jumeirah beach clubs by day
No other city asks you to dress for a boardroom dinner at ten and a daybed at noon the next day. The Le Privé styling desk packs for both halves of Dubai, from Gate Village in DIFC to the beach clubs along Jumeirah.
By Le Privé styling & travel desk · Dubai / DIFC

Dubai is two cities that happen to share an airport. The first is the Dubai International Financial Centre, a grid of towers and courtyards off Sheikh Zayed Road where the private dinners happen, in rooms that are dark, cold and formal in a way the rest of the Gulf is not. The second is the coast: Jumeirah Beach Road, the Palm, the long run of beach clubs and resort pools where the same people spend the following day. Members who come for a week do both, often on the same day, and the wardrobe has to move between them without a suitcase.
The Le Privé styling desk has packed for Dubai more often than for any other city on our calendar, because our members go in every month from October to April. This is the edit we have arrived at: two halves, one capsule, nothing that only works in one of the two cities.
DIFC after dark: Gate Village
Gate Village is the cluster of low stone buildings behind the DIFC Gate, and it is where the city's serious evenings happen. Zuma, La Petite Maison, Gaia and Cipriani are within a few minutes' walk of each other across the courtyards, the galleries stay open late, and the private dining rooms above the restaurants are where the deals and the birthdays are. It is very air-conditioned. Dress for the room, not for the thirty-degree night outside it.
That means tailoring, and in Dubai it means darker and sharper than you would wear in London. The dinner jacket is not optional here, it is the local uniform for men at a private table, and Tom Ford's Shelton is the one the desk keeps recommending because the shoulder reads well across a long room and the cloth holds up in the cold. Black or midnight, open collar, no tie. A black loafer, never a boot. Dubai does not do boots in the evening.
For women, DIFC evenings run long and slim. A column dress in black, a sharp trouser with a silk shirt, or a tuxedo jacket worn as a top. Sheer sleeves and covered shoulders are both welcome and practical in rooms this cold. Heels are fine because the walk is a courtyard and the car is at the door.

The beach clubs: Jumeirah and the Palm
The next morning begins on the coast. The run from Jumeirah Beach Road out to the Palm holds the clubs the desk's members use most: Nammos at the Four Seasons Jumeirah, Twiggy at the Park Hyatt on the Creek, the beach at the Bulgari on Jumeirah Bay, Surf Club and the Nikki Beach pool on Pearl Jumeirah, and the long deck at the One&Only on the Palm. They are formal in their own way. A beach club day in Dubai is dressed, not undressed, and the thing you wear over the swimsuit is the outfit.
The desk's answer is a long dress that works as a cover-up at noon and as a dinner dress at eight. Jacquemus's La Robe Saudade does exactly that: fluid enough to throw over a swimsuit, cut well enough to wear to Gaia the same evening with a change of shoe. In a pale colour it is the single most useful piece on this page. Under it, a black swimsuit, which is the only colour that goes from the pool to a restaurant without looking like a swimsuit.
Dubai is the one city where the thing you wear to the pool and the thing you wear to dinner can, and should, be the same dress.
Fabric, heat and the car
Everything in this capsule is chosen for the twenty-metre walk between a cold building and a hot car. Silk, fine cashmere, lightweight wool and linen. Nothing heavy, nothing that holds heat, nothing that needs a coat over it. The cold rooms are the problem, not the heat, so a fine knit or a silk shirt that can go on in a restaurant and come off on the terrace is the most-used layer of the week. Men should think about a lightweight shirt-jacket in a dark colour for the same reason.

One bag for both cities
A Dubai day moves through more hands than most: valets, hostesses, drivers, a boutique in the Dubai Mall or at the Mall of the Emirates on the way back from the coast. The bag has to look right on a DIFC dining chair and on a sunbed at Nammos, and it has to close properly in a car. The Row's Margaux in the 15 size is the desk's choice because it is structured, it has no hardware to catch the sun and it goes with the dinner jacket as easily as with the dress. In a pale leather it is a day bag. In black it is everything.
The shopping, if there is time
Fashion Avenue in the Dubai Mall holds the largest concentration of the houses in this edit, and the Dubai Farfetch partner boutique can bring pieces to a hotel for a fitting for members who do not want to spend an afternoon under the dome. The desk prefers the quieter boutiques on the Jumeirah side when the diary allows, and the Alserkal Avenue galleries in Al Quoz for a late afternoon that has nothing to do with shopping.

Packing the Dubai capsule
One carry-on: dinner jacket, two dresses, two swimsuits, a silk shirt, a fine knit, a lightweight trouser, a loafer, a sandal and a pump. The Le Prive Network concierge keeps the DIFC tables, the beach club bookings and the boutique contacts together for members in town for a few nights, and the styling desk updates this edit each season on leprive.net and at @leprive.network. Pack for the cold room and the hot car, and the rest of Dubai looks after itself.
