Before the first watch: five better questions

Start with fit, service and everyday use. A watch is more interesting when the decision belongs to you.

When will you wear it?

A watch chosen for daily wear asks different questions from one intended for occasional evenings. Think about your routine, how it sits beneath a sleeve and whether you prefer something light or substantial on the wrist. Try on more than one case size if you can. Measurements help, but the shape of the case, the lugs and the strap can change how a watch feels. There is no universal size that makes a purchase correct.

What are you agreeing to maintain?

Read the manufacturer’s guidance on servicing, water resistance and care. Understand how the movement is powered and what its normal use involves. Ask about service arrangements, estimated costs and the availability of replacement straps or bracelets before purchasing. Treat a water-resistance rating according to the manufacturer’s instructions, rather than as a general promise that every activity is suitable. The practical details matter long after the first impression.

Who is selling it?

Check the identity of the seller and whether the channel is authorized by the brand. For a pre-owned piece, ask about condition, service history, documentation and the terms of any warranty. A photograph cannot establish authenticity, and an editorial mention is not an authentication service. For a substantial purchase, seek appropriate independent expertise rather than relying on a short description or a familiar-looking logo.

What does the full price include?

Consider taxes, delivery, insurance where relevant and any costs associated with a return or adjustment. Read the seller’s cancellation and return terms and your applicable consumer rights. Do not buy on the assumption that a watch will rise in value. Resale outcomes, availability and waiting lists can change; a piece you want to wear is a different proposition from an investment claim.

Would you still choose it quietly?

Set aside the launch campaign and the conversation around scarcity for a moment. Would the design still appeal if nobody recognized it? The official brand sites below are useful starting points for learning about current collections and authorized retail channels.
